Comment on Soft Hackle Flies – my “go-to” box… by Ernest

I have and use trout flies of all types and sizes. My go to type is the soft hackle.

In my early years I fished one stream where the best fly by far was an Orange Fish Hawk. I tried many variations of the pattern, but the original dressing was best.

As I've moved back and forth between spring creeks and freestones, high gradient and low gradient streams, the size, shape and density of the flies have changed. For the last three years my best fly has been the Red Horse Fly. It has a thin body of mane hair from a sorrel horse counter ribbed with copper wire, and a soft, light furnace hackle.

We moved last month to a new home. I'll be trying out some new streams. Soft hackles will be right up there for the new local exploration. The big red horse moved with us.

I was surprised at seeing this book on this front page, because this was my first fly fishing textbook almost 30 years ago. The book was translated into the Japanese Language, but otherwise, the design and illustrations were just the same as the original (That's why I can tell this is the book). At that time, there were not many books about fly fishing in Japan. If I remember correctly, there was not much explanation about casting fly line in this book. Besides, I remember, at one place, the author wrote that you fail to catch fish if you try to be the front page of a fly fishing journal and that you had to keep your profile low, down on your knees if necessary so that you wouldn't spook trout. This is one of the reason I didn't learn how to cast for years. I approached fish holding water often on my knees, did leader cast. In this way, I could achieve drag-free drift, and indeed I caught fish OK. I don't have the book now, though. I think I gave the copy to a friend. Anyway, this is a great book and I thank Gus for letting me remember some pleasant memories.

What a cool book. Thanks for posting this. I reserved a copy at B&N and am going to head over at lunch to pick it up. I may link back to this post from my blog, hope that's not an issue - I know a lot of folks who would probably like to read it.
