Thank you for viewing this listing for FOUR sets of Reed & Barton ALL STERLING Fish Forks and Knives in the eternally popular Francis I pattern. I have an additional four sets available in another listing as well as a listing for a rare Pierced Fish Serving Set if you would like a COMPLETE fish service for eight all in Francis I.
Get these while they last. While I do see all sterling fish forks in this pattern normally available, the all sterling fish knives have become especially hard to find in recent years.
The particulars of this set of eight pieces are a follows:
4 all sterling knives - each 8 1/8" long. They are all appropriately marked with the older, "Eagle/R/Lion STERLING" mark. No monograms
4 all sterling forks - each 7" long. They are all appropriately marked, "Reed & Barton STERLING" No monograms.
All 8 pieces combined weigh 498 grams on my kitchen scale.
Like many flatware implements, we have those ingenious Victorians to thank for the invention of a particular set of cutlery for eating fish. Fish knives have an unusually shaped blade which is not used to cut, but rather gently separate the fish's tender flesh from the bones and the pointed tip can more easily remove a stray fish bone. Called "fish eaters" in the UK, these implements have been the subject of spirited debate for generations. And don't get me started on whether a fish knife is properly held like a normal dinner knife or like a pencil with the blade held between the thumb and index and middle fingers! The "high-out-of-sight" aristocracy thought them to be very "nouveau riche", while the burgeoning upper middle classes were all about adding more and more items to their dining table, often as a test of social class. I fall into the more is more camp when it comes to flatware, so "Phone for the fish knives, Norman" *.
I offer free shipping with insurance with this item. If you have fewer than 10 response scores on , please contact me before offerding. If you need more photographs or specific information, please feel free to message me.
* How To Get On In Society by John Betjeman
Phone for the fish knives, Norman
As cook is a little unnerved;
You kiddies have crumpled the serviettes
And I must have things daintily served.
Are the requisites all in the toilet?
The frills round the cutlets can wait
Till the girl has replenished the cruets
And switched on the logs in the grate.
It's ever so close in the lounge dear,
But the vestibule's comfy for tea
And Howard is riding on horseback
So do come and take some with me
Now here is a fork for your pastries
And do use the couch for your feet;
I know that I wanted to ask you-
Is trifle sufficient for sweet?
Milk and then just as it comes dear?
I'm afraid the preserve's full of stones;
Beg pardon, I'm soiling the doileys
With afternoon tea-cakes and scones.
